As a parent, have you ever wished you had more tools to support your typically developing child as they navigate life with a sibling who has disabilities or other support needs? Sibshops is a fun, engaging program designed for children ages 8–13 who have brothers or sisters with disabilities, developmental delays, serious health concerns, or other support needs—and for parents like you who want to support them. In this 5-week program, your child will take part in an activity-based group where they can have fun, meet other kids with similar family experiences, learn self-care and coping skills, learn new ways to interact and relate to their sisters or brothers, and gain valuable peer support. At the same time, you, along with other parents, will explore the unique challenges your typically developing children may face, learn strategies for navigating tough conversations, and build skills for teaching them about their sibling’s diagnosis or care needs. The program concludes with a joint activity in which you join the sibling group to spend focused, meaningful time with your participating child. Sibshops offers you family connection, understanding, and practical tools to strengthen relationships and support the well-being of every child in your home.
Who are Sibshops for? Sibshops are for 8 - 13 year-old sisters and brothers of children who have support needs (disabilities, health challenges, mental health challenges) along with one or both of their parents/caregivers. Siblings with support needs, and siblings outside of the 8-13 age range are unable to attend.
